Dr. Hawthorne Smith is a licensed psychologist and experienced clinical director with over 28 years at the Bellevue Program for Survivors of Torture (PSOT) in New York City, where he currently serves as Program Director. A dedicated advocate for trauma survivors, Dr. Smith brings extensive expertise in nonprofit administration, trauma therapy, family therapy, clinical supervision, and prevention. In his role, he oversees PSOT’s clinical and teaching activities, administrative functions, and critical areas like fundraising, budgeting, and program development, contributing to PSOT's role as a leading organization in trauma-informed care and support for survivors of torture. Dr. Smith is also the current president of the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs, where he collaborates with other leaders to advance policies and practices supporting the rehabilitation of torture survivors nationwide. Alongside his clinical leadership, Dr. Smith is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine, where he teaches and mentors future practitioners. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, an M.I.A. in International Affairs from Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), and a B.S.F.S. in Foreign Service with a focus on African Studies from Georgetown University. Dr. Smith's lifelong commitment to trauma-informed care has made him a distinguished figure in the field, fostering healing and resilience in survivors of torture and other human rights abuses.
